Summer is here, and so are 58405 new ice cream flavours. Hey, we’re not complaining.
While we get set to hear of strange flavours hitting the market, let’s take a moment to take this bit of news in : there are going to be some new flavours of ice cream which will be made up of trash food. Ew, right? That’s what we thought too. Until we read that it tastes divine. We’re obviously intrigued.
The Portland based ice cream brand Salt & Straw have decided to devote the month of June to ice cream flavours that have been made from food that might have ended up in the dustbins.
USA has been known to fight the problem of food wastage, and this seems like a good use of all that food that was going to the wastebins. Salt & Straw are making Second-Steeped Rum Spices and Apple Butter ice cream with spices where they plan on re-using the rum-soaked spices (including peppercorns, vanilla, and orange peel) in cream. They will also use apple butter made from bruised apples that would have otherwise ended up being thrown away.
We think this is a rather thoughtful gesture. At a time when food wastage in USA is at an all time high, it is great to see local brands taking an initiative to be heard, and to make the system better. Reusing trash food to make a completely new food item that is sure to be a hit in the market seems like a great gesture, and definitely has our stamp of approval.
Salt & Straw will start selling these ice cream flavours from the month of June. We wish them all the luck for this endeavour.
