The cool kids have a new social media platform, and it looks like Twitter is nearing it’s end. Or is it? Let’s find out.
Mastodon, a social network, is an underdog with some serious spunk, and looks like it’s here to take over Twitterverse. Started by 24-year-old Eugen Rochko, Mastodon allows users to create accounts, follow people and post status updates called “toots” But what makes it stand out is the fact that it has a better privacy control than Twitter. Users get 500 characters to express themselves (as opposed to only 140 on Twitter) Plus you can choose individual updates to be made private or public (something like a Facebook account) This means there is no need to have your entire account private or public. People say it is a better version with a better user experience compared to Twitter. Mastodon currently has a little more than 41000 people on board.
Mastodon is a type of free and open source software which does not seem to have any board pressing to monetize data user (at least right now there isn’t!) Apparently Rochko does not want to monetize it at all!
This looks like a cleaner version of Tweetdeck to be honest.
As more users sign up, there is bound to be some rowdiness on the platform. Maybe the money bit will also come in at some point in the future, but that is something that only time can tell. For now we can only wait and watch. Mastodon is a free and non commercial version of Twitter, and maybe in this stale social media space where every platform is trying to resemble the other, this comes like a breath of fresh air.
Would you be willing to give this a try soon? Tell us what you think!
